José James is usually described as the jazz singer of the hip-hop generation. The American singer from Minneapolis brought his honeyed voice to New York City, where he co-founded Rainbow Blonde Records. He was inspired by Marvin Gaye, Flying Lotus, Billie Holiday and John Coltrane for his unique sound that mixes jazz, soul and hip-hop. When his album The Dreamer was released in 2008 on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, The Guardian dubbed him a bastard child of Leon Thomas, Bobby McFerrin and D’Angelo. This year, James will treat Gent Jazz to a performance of that breakthrough album – his ode to Martin Luther King.
