Nearly sixty years after moving from Kingston, Jamaica, his hometown, to the United States, pianist Monty Alexander is an American classic, relentlessly traveling the world on various projects, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. His inspired concept is one that is informed by timeless truths: endless melody formation, effervescent grooves, sophisticated voicings, a romantic spirit, and a consistent tendency, as Alexander accurately puts it, “to build up the heat and stir up a storm.” During any given performance, Alexander applies this aesthetic to a repertoire that encompasses a wide range of jazz and Jamaican musical expressions – the American songbook and the blues, gospel and bebop, calypso and reggae. He can be heard on more than 75 recordings and is cited in The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing) as the fifth greatest jazz pianist ever. The Jamaican government appointed Alexander a Commander of the Order of Distinction in 2000, while the University of The West Indies awarded him an honorary doctorate (DLitt) in 2018 in recognition of his achievements.
