Tutu Puoane thought jazz was music for old people when she grew up in Pretoria, South Africa. Now, she is regarded as one of the best jazz singers in Belgium. With no musical training but heaps of talent, she chased her dream of becoming a singer in Johannesburg at the age of eighteen. She studied at the music academy in Cape Town, where she finally discovered jazz and fell in love with the genre. In Cape Town, she was noticed by the Dutch pianist Jack van Poll, after which she continued her studies at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Two years later, she found her way to Belgium, where she joined forces with Flemish pianist Ewout Pierreux. Her latest album is a tribute to Martin Luther King and it is still reverberating.
